When BMC FootPrints Asset Core is enabled for a workspace, the Action button can be found:
on the results page of a device search
by default, on the Asset Information tab or section of an issue page. The button can be moved to a different tab by a FootPrints workspace or system administrator.
on the Configuration Item (CI) Details page
on the View Asset Summary
The Action button is the means by which you can access many BMC FootPrints Asset Core actions. By default, the button displays the View Asset Summary action. That is, if you were to click the Action button, a summary of all of the information in the database for that particular device is displayed. The arrow to the immediate right of the button is used to display the other actions you can take.
NOTE
This documentation only describes how you access the actions, not the actions that you can take and how to work with them. For complete information on the actions themselves, refer to the BMC FootPrints Asset Core documentation. This does not apply to View Asset Summary, Run Audit, or Advanced Actions.
The actions are:
View Asset Summary—View a summary of an asset. An important point to note is that, when performing a search, the search string may appear somewhere in the asset summary but may not be displayed in the fields that are embedded in the FootPrints issue. Also note that an Action Button is displayed on the summary page. The summary displays four tabs, each of which lists data associated with the asset:
Hardware—Hardware within the asset
Software—Software installed on the asset
Security—Data regarding anti-virus software, firewalls, etc.
Action History—A history of Advanced Actions taken by BMC FootPrints Asset Core on the asset
View Events—View the asset's system, application, and other events.
View Processes—View the processes currently running on the asset.
Transfer File—Transfer files to or from the asset
Run Audit—Audit the asset's software, hardware, security, etc.
Ping—Ping the asset. When the asset is pinged, a pop-up window is displayed showing the result of the ping.
Reboot—Reboot the asset.
Shutdown—Shut the asset down. You may need to close applications on the asset before initiating a shutdown.
Wake Up—Turn the asset on. In the BMC FootPrints Asset Core documentation, this is referred to as "Wake On LAN".
Advanced Actions—Advanced Actions are used to modify the configuration of an asset. An Advanced Action can be used to deploy software, change registry settings, control services, and more. Advanced actions are described in more detail in the BMC FootPrints Asset Core documentation where Advanced Actions are referred to as "Operational Rules".
Button selections are persistent. That is, while View Asset Summary is the default action displayed on the Action button, if you select another action, such as View Events, the button will be labeled with View Events until another action is selected.
Pending Advanced Action Icon
BMC FootPrints Asset Core can, through its Advanced Actions function, create a "pending action" associated with an asset. That action may depend on an approval via the FootPrints Change Manager module, an escalation, or some other factor. When an asset has a pending action and that asset is also associated with an issue, an icon is displayed to the left of the Action Button indicating that there is an Advanced Action pending. If an agent is able to edit an issue, the agent can remove the pending action by first clicking the Pending Advanced Action icon and then clicking the Remove This Action button that is displayed in a pop-up. The Remove This Action button only works in the Edit views of an issue.
Advanced Action Messages
Some specialized messages, displayed in pop-up windows, have been developed specifically for Advanced Action selections as follows:
Queue Problem—If a problem has been encountered while attempting to queue an Advanced Action, an error message is displayed with specific information describing the problem. Contact your BMC FootPrints Asset Core administrator if the problem persists.
Replace Advanced Action—If an Advanced Action is already associated with an issue and you attempt to associate a second Advanced Action with the issue, a pop-up window asks if you wish to replace the first Advanced Action with the new one. The window also provides the name of the existing, associated Advanced Action.
Additional Processing Required—If you try to associate an Advanced Action with an issue and that Advanced Action requires an escalation rule or a Change Manager approval before it can be executed, a pop-up window is displayed. The window requests confirmation to associate the Advanced Action with the issue.
